[RC] horse slaughter vs vegitarianism - Julie PearsallI hope I'm not about to start a fire storm... First, let me be clear that I respect every individual's right to choose how they will care for their aged or infirm horse. That said.............. When I hear about "public outcry" against the human consumption of horse meat, I have to wonder if those decrying the practice are vegitarians or vegans. If someone eats beef, or pork, or lamb, why can't someone eat horse? Just because its unfamiliar doesn't mean its wrong. The rhetoric sounds a lot like the cry of the anti-hunting crowd. They don't want the deer shot and eaten, but they complain when the deer eat their garden. They don't seem to notice how many deer die over the winter or are killed by cars. One experiment moved over 100 deer from a suburban neighbor hood. Half of them died while returning to their original territory. If humans are going to remove horse predators, increase reproduction and foal survival rates, then it seems, to me, that humans are responsible for mortality rates as well. I get the feeling that we just don't like the idea of death. Dogs are considered food in parts of Asia. How come nobody seems to be screaming about that?
