Montana and quite a few other western states are "brand inspection"* states. If you are going to move a horse out of a county, it has to be inspected, and then either a temporary or for more money a permanent "brand inspection" is issued. When you purchase a horse you need two things 1. a bill of sale. 2. the old brand inspection paper. When you get the horse home, it is re-inspected, a new paper issued and the state keeps the bill of sale and the old inspection paper. The brand inspection lists the registration numbers, if they exist. Of course if you do not move the horse out of the county where you purchased it, you will not have to have the first brand inspection. You would have to have the bill of sale though. I have no idea what would happen if you have a brand inspection, and later someone shows up with registration papers and claims to own the horse. I suspect that some lawyers would feed their families for awhile. Since you are seldom asked to produce your brand inspection, and it would not be hard for many folk to lie to a brand inspector and get inspection papers on a stolen horse it is quite probable that little protection for ownership rights is really achieved. Ed *"brand inspection" is a somewhat misleading term. The animal inspected does not have to be branded. A better term might be "ownership certification" or something like that.
