Re: [RC] Shortening stirrups (was Feet falling asleep solved) - Diane Trefethen

For anyone who does have this problem I solved it for
me. I took the advice of someone who said my stirrups
were too long. I shortened them up one which worked
much better.

Another problem that shortening stirrups can solve is when you cannot seem to post comfortably. Some riders think that the longer their stirrups are, the deeper they will sit in the saddle and the more secure they will be. This is not necessarily true... sort of a "if some is good, more is better" mistake. If you are going to post, you want your stirrups not long, not short, but just right. That means at the exact length that will allow you to easily rise and fall in cadence with the trot of the horse you are riding. While you can start with your stirrup bottoms hitting just above that knobby bone on the inside of your ankle, you might need to shorten them if your horse has a long stride or lengthen them for a more pony-like trot. The length of your leg is just the starting point; the length of your horse's stride is the refinement. Having your stirrups at the right length will improve your balance, seat, hands!, and allow you to ride more comfortably and securely than when they are too long or too short.

BTW, stride length and height do NOT go hand in hand. One of the biggest trots (working, not extended) I ever rode was on a 13.3h mare.
