RE: [RC] Raffles breeding - heidi

I don't know if breeder Michael Bowling coined the phrase, or merely uses it often, but he talks about how our culture has a "cult of the sire" when it comes to breeding.  There have been some mediocre stallions who have made tremendous reputations because they were bred to good mares and they got all the credit for the resultant good foals--and likewise, no matter how many poor mares may have been bred to a stallion, he gets blamed for all of the faults as well.

As Ed points out, *Raffles has been a cornerstone for many programs that bred using horses and that were sticklers for good feet--and there is always the other side of the pedigree to consider.

"... Raffles get for really bad feet.  They say he had bad feet and passed it on...'

That is not our experience.  Our 3 mares, one 64% Raffles, have great feet.  Of course, they are also the result of the Shalimar breeding program.  The sire also stood at Rush Creek Land and Livestock Co.  I can't imagine either Doc. Munson, or Rush Creek breeding horses with poor feet.

For a number of reasons, Raffles was bred to many many mares.  Some of them probably should not have been bred, the predictable result is that there must be bad horses with Raffles blood.
