I have several pairs of Carousel and JFHR tights purchased over the  
last 8 or 9 years, and all of them are smalls.  One difference is  
that the smalls that Evelyn makes are about 1" bigger in the waist-- 
and she's happy to make them with an inch smaller waist.  Most are  
cotton lycra, some are polarfleece of different weights.

So I would suggest your experience is not typical.
