RE: [RC] 30 min rule - heidi

Diane, I've already mentioned your last reason as the reason why I favor such a change.  First of all, horses that take over 30 minutes to pulse down are NOT common in the sport--so a rule change would impact only a few horses.  But that said, those few horses that DO consistently have recovery issues also DO tend to develop long-term problems.  Or yes, even die.  But they fall through the cracks, because no one can point a finger at any one ride that killed them.  It isn't the horses that are already being ridden within their capabilities that are impacted--if those were the only horses out there, we wouldn't need any rules at all relating to horse welfare, or even ride vets.  It is the handful of horses that are NOT ridden within their capability that are the issue in ALL of our protective measures, including this proposed one.

Personally, it seems to me that we try so hard to plug so many other "holes" in how we take care of our horses--why are so many people upset at trying to plug this one?

Heidi

From the discussion so far, it sounds like the reason is, "We think if
they had only 30 mins to pulse down instead of 60 mins, all those people
who race to the finish on tired horses would have to slow down... and
besides, most horses pulse down in less than 30 mins anyway".  If that is
the rationale, well, it sucks.  Now if you have statistics showing that a
significant number of raced-to-the-finish horses who pulse down in 30-60
mins need treatment in the next 24 hours, or that horses who routinely take
over 30 mins to pulse down OFTEN disappear from Endurance (die?), then
THOSE are good reasons.
