At a Bergy clinic I was shown how he sometimes "scores" a shoe to give it more
flex. I think this may the idea you are talking about. He did this with steel or
aluminum shoes.
I thought that the Mustad Nail Shu did a pretty good job of expanding. It is
rubber or rubble like compound over aluminum. There was enough to
support the hoof and to allow expansion. Most of the plastic shoes
have a heel bar with is designed to prevent too much expansion.
I prefer gluing these on and then nailing.
PS: I've recently been playing with the Dallmer Clogs without
the heel bar. The one-rat tests seem to show that the horse
is happy. No distance yet. Only a few tests. The Dallmers
are the most like the Mustad that I've found. So, if I have to
shoe, I think I'll be able to do the switch without the horse
having to adjust his stride.
