Re: [RC] Serious Question//Cardiac Pacemaker in Endurance - Beverley H. Kane, MDSharon, It's important to know what your friend's (and that of anyone else responding w/ h/h own story) underlying condition or specific arrhythmia is and what kind of pacemaker she has--single chamber, double chamber, on demand, constant firing, defribrillator, permanent, temporary, etc. Some sports are relatively contraindicated by the fact many people with arrhythmias are on anti-coagulants (blood thinners). So the risk might be from bleeding rather from a heart complication or pacemaker malfunction per se. You can have your friend PM me if she is still upset after following up w/ her cardiologist and asking him to reconcile his advice w/ that which is in the book. She seems to be 100% reliant. Her doctor, at this point, does not exactly understand the rigors of the sport and thinks she should be able to ride. However the book that came with the pacer suggests that horseback riding (let alone endurance riding) is a "no-no". She has a follow-up with her doc next week and will get very specific but in the meantime would like other people's input as she is very upset about this. So how many out there have a pacer who continued to pursue our sport of choice?? Especially people 100% reliant.
