Re: [RC] BC awards ideas - Barbara McCraryOne of my little treasured awards is a piece of limestone that came from an area of old limekilns in the hills of Santa Cruz. I rode a home-bred mare on her first 50-miler, the Fireworks 50, and we finished last or thereabouts. As I remember it, this rock was offered to another rider as the prize, and that rider refused it as being insignificant (in front of the whole audience.) I was happy to have it as a memento of the mare's first ride. I printed her name and the ride and date on the underside of the rock and it rests on a windowsill in my office. I am easily pleased with the meaning, rather than the item.Another one of my special prizes is a tiny, plastic trophy cup covered with some silver-colored coating. It is for BC on one of the Duck's early XP rides. It says, on a piece of paper, in fading hand-printed ink, "I rode the hell out of my horse, and I still won Best Condition - Simpson Springs XP." I have always treasured the humor behind it and that fact that I was riding one of the best horses I ever owned. He lies buried on our ranch, with a large rock headstone over his grave. It reads (on a custom-made bronze plaque), "Courage - 1974-2001 From his back, I discovered the world."
