Re: [RC] shelly hooves in summer -- advice? - Don HustonHello Dawn,The sidewalls (quarters) sometimes get shelly because fungus can get into the whiteline thru the nail holes. Filling the holes from the outside might even make it worse because the fungus still comes in from the bottom and sealing the top just traps it. In Jan I started soaking my horse's hooves in a solution of boraxo powdered hand soap with lanolin. About 1/8cup in a gallon jug of water. I bought 4 Easysoaker Boots size large (horseshoe size 1). You want them big and easy to put on. I tie him up with some hay for a snack and soak his feet for an hour or so 1-2 times a week while I do other stuff. The biggest improvement so far has been the growth of a good solid frog. Another plus is on farrier day well soaked hooves are easier to trim and the nails will not split the hooves like when they are dry and hard. Might help.
