Sucking the fun out factor: as long as I do slow (7 hour +) 50s as my long distance, I can let a lot slide - heart rate monitors, precision shoeing (as opposed to keg shoes on the front), aggressive electrolyting, special diets. I can do a slow 50 with a couple months of conditioning rides and a trail. To do a 100 seems more logistically daunting. Laurie in Clare Hmmmm, let's see, I think I used a HRM on one of my 30+ 100-mile rides so far. I never used any special shoeing, diets, or electrolytes -- nothing different from my 50-mile rides. But then, I'm a minimalist; the fewer things you have that can go wrong, the less that will go wrong. Uh, a correction: I let my farrier once talk me into using shoes he made out of a new bar stock for a 100-mile that had a lot of gravel and rock. He guaranteed they'd do better. They wore out by 85 miles and Kahlil spent his whole time in that vet check having four new shoes put on (I believe that was a major factor in his finishing second instead of first on that ride). 100's do require more conditioning, but if you ride three or four 50's a year they will provide most of the necessary conditioning. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxx http://www.rnbw.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
