[RC] Swelling between eyes - Lari SheaHey Angie,
A couple years ago, I parked my F-350 and 6 horse trailer in the
middle of the 10 acre meadow behind my house, and set two of my endurance
horses free. They knew the terrain well, having lived there
together for many months. Nikita wandered around to the off side of
the trailer, while Sungari grazed away from the driver's side of the
rig. All of a sudden, Sungari realized he couldn't see his mate,
wheeled around and leapt off at a gallop. Nikita heard the noise,
startled, and bolted back behind the trailer. They crashed
into each other's heads like the clash of the titans! Niki's
head didn't look the worse for wear, but Sungari swelled like he'd been
hit between the eyes by a baseball bat. If I wouldn't have
been there, I'd have sworn sadistic vandals had tried to kill my
horse! He looked a bit "abashed" for a few minutes, but
quickly recovered.
However, both another endurance rider and I have lost much beloved
horses due to joint infections probably caused by unseen splinters.
In both cases, the pastured horses came in three-legged lame, with no
discernable wounds, abcesses or injuries. I won't go into details,
but after some misdiagnoses and lost time treating the wrong things, both
horses developed raging bone infections which necessitated their being
put down. Not to be an alarmist, but get Kaboot to a top diagnostic
vet, asap.
