We do the same for our crowd, even though it take
more time. We have an Arab who is an Air Fern, a Standardbred who would
steal EVERYONE'S food, and a 25 year old who eats at his oooowwwnnnnn
ssppppeeeeddd - SLLLOOOOWWWWLLLLLYYYY.
We throw everyone in their own stall with their dinner. The
Arab & STB each get a flake of hay to occupy them when they get done.
The 25 year old works on his beet pulp slurry for about an hour, then they all
go out to as much hay as they can stand.
It really allows us to tailor the rations to each horse's needs. It
also lets us handle each horse several time a day - something that might not
happen if we just threw rations into buckets out in the field.
Matter of fact, I
generally separate all of my horses for about three hours at feeding time.
That way I'm pretty much assured that each horse gets what I put out for
them. Then I go back outside late in the evening and turn them loose
again.
