It's not a good idea to give bicarbonate to endurance
horses while they're competing. Race horses can benefit from it,
but it can be harmful to endurance horses. (Something about
their system turning acid or alkaline--can't remember which, just that it's
bad...)
For tying up, try selenium +E and decreasing grain when
not riding that day.
Anyone use Electrolyte Plus made by Equine
Gold? It says: Electrolyte Plus also contains sodium bicarbonate, which has
been shown to help prevent tying-up.
