For example, are they black and hard, white and soft, or brown and healthy; are they trimmed down to the quick or with plenty of hoof below the horses foot inside; are they trimmed for good balance or does the horse need correction to attain best balanced; are there cracks or other problems; are the laminae strong or weak; is the sole tough and flexible or soft and delicate; is the outer hoof wall water repellant or dry and sensitive to moisture; etc., etc., etc. The condition of the hoof dictates how to dress it.
