We moved up from a 250 a few years back and have never regretted it.
You gave the reasons-safety, stability and comfort.  I would suggest you
consider a 4x4.  When you need it, you need it.  We haul a 4 horse
bumper pull with a Dodge One Ton Dually and have an 8 1/2 foot camper on
the truck.  Great rig.
