That said, I realize not everyone who hits the ground head first dies quickly. Nevertheless, I'm a stubborn person and I don't wear a helmet. For all the great stories I've read about lives being saved by wearing helmets, I have to point out that much of what passes for civilization these days came about through a lot of horse riding, and if so many people really died from falling off and hitting their heads, I'd have to wonder how our ancestors survived to get us to the age of motorized vehicles. Hey, it's just one person's opinion, OK? Actually, a lot of them didn't. Mortality rates were much higher and lifespancs much shorter in times past. Oh, you can add me to the list of people who probably wouldn't still be here if I hadn't worn a helmet when riding. Your reaction is similar to people who still smoke, knowing what it does to them (and they have stories about how Uncle Ned lived to be 100 smoking every day). The ability of the human mind to rationalize what it WANTS to do is amazing. Never fear, I support your right to not wear a helmet. It's your brain, not mine. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxx http://www.rnbw.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
