[RC] Age of horse and first 100 ride - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Dodie Sable dodie@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== It is my intention to do my first 100 mile in 2007 (whee) but I am trying to determine which horse to ride. I would prefer to take my older mare (who will be 15 next year) as she has been doing this sport since 1999 and is very able to pace herself and relax and enjoy the work. I wonder if this is too old to do her first 100 mile ride? She's done over 1000 miles competitive, limited and endurance and has earned six top 10 placings, two BC's. She's in excellent shape, usually out works the younger horses because she's learned to relax, can still finish top 10 if I'd let her but I just stay middle of the pack, and again, I'd really prefer to do my first 100 mile on her so I'm not stressing...but I don't want to kill her, either (grin). The other mare has just as much desire to work, has a better speed index, but this is only her second year out and she's still learning how to pace herself and not fight to race after every horse that passes her or to get all worked up in the holds. She has guts and she's dying to work! She's 8 years old. Both mares are going to be working this year on 50's and multiday rides. Can someone tell me if any 15 year old horse have successfully worked 100 mile rides? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
