Re: [RC] osteoporosis//Calcium and Vit D Out of Favor - Beverley H. Kane, MDFrom: Diane Trefethen <tref@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Wait a minute! Does that mean that if you have had breast cancer that you need to get rid of all extra adipose tissue PDQ? Do you have to choose between a re-occurance of the cancer or osteoporosis? ***The key word is "all" here. Risk of breast cancer goes up with significant obesity. I suspect that the amount of fat that has a salutary effect on bone is much less than the amount that aggravates breast cancer. Some one will have to do a study look at the difference between estrogen receptors on bone cells vs. breast cells and what the ideal amount of good fat is. Someone will have to volunteer to get very fat for this study. Does the extra time in the sun getting vitamin D and skin cancers play a part in this? ***Risk of skin cancer goes up with sunburn and skin damage. You can get a lot of Vit D w/ much less sunlight than it takes to create mutations. Ice cream is an excellent source of bioavailable calcium. It will be provided free in unlimited quantities by the Women's Health Initiative to study the above bone/breast question.
