RE: [RC] hard to catch horse - Rae Callaway

With every hard to catch horse I've had to deal with, I go out and walk. No
matter how long it takes, I just walk after them. I never try to corner
them, chase them or otherwise catch them - just walk after them. It becomes
a dominance thing and the horse gets tired of being made to move, so he
stops. First time or two, I may not do anything more than put the halter
on, give a treat, then walk away. They learn that I won't quit until they
stop. The most I ever get from them after this training technique is maybe
a couple of steps away, but they remember that I won't stop, so they give in
because I've established myself as herd leader.

Subject: [RC] hard to catch horse

Well, a couple weeks ago, I went out one night to pull him out of
the pasture. He walked up to me like normal, but as soon as I
lifted my arm to put the leadrope around his neck, he took off at a
gallop and make circles around the 3 acre pasture, then would stop
to look at me.

I think he's "playing with you"--or more accurately (it's a cross
between this and the 'herd leader' thing) he's testing to see if you
can 'beat him at this game'. Reasons I think this: his attitude
seems playful, and he turns to look at you to keep you in the
game--otherwise he would just keep running away. I would repeat what
you did last time that worked--it'll probably only take a day or two
to 'remind him'. One thing you can try before that--when you go out
to catch him, before you get to him (before he can spin and run
away), turn your back to him and BACK UP to around his
shoulder. The reach forward to put the halter on. Sometimes that
works--it's like it "breaks the game up" when you don't look them in
the face...

good luck!
