You might try a sidepull. My guys had the same reaction to a bitless that Angie's did.

But, a Sidepull is much simpler. The only issues I've ever had with it were rubbing on the nose. I haven't done endurance, but did gallop out alot this summer with my cross country trainer in it and had no trouble. The horse rated as easily in that as his happy mouth french link. (He's really easy to rate!)
