I think Angie's right that you have the skills to judge how ready your 
horse is.  If you live within striking distance, pre-ride the trails. 
That'll make it easier for both of you.  My sense of Tevis is that most 
people who dream of attempting it ought to make be sure they can be 
happy with whatever their attempt yields.  There are lots and lots of 
horses and riders on the trail who shouldn't be there.  HOpefully those 
riders are happy to make it as far as they do and hopefully they haven't 
hurt their horses too much just to quiet the ticking of that damned clock!
