Re: [RC] Is it possible--100 miles - rides2far@xxxxxxxxI'm looking for some thoughts/opinions on whether it's possible to begin conditioning a recently started under saddle 12 yr old on Mar >1st, and having her ready for a 100 the first of Aug. How would you >go about preparing this horse to complete 100 miles by Aug? TWA I can't really understand why you'd want to. :-P Kinda like if you were a couch potato now...and trained to do a marathon in 4 hrs. by then. Why not set smaller goals, reach them and work your way up? Personally...I'd take things one step at a time. Chances are she'll be like all the other horses...have set backs, need 6 mo. off here and there for injuries, have to learn to eat and drink on the trail. Get rubs and you spend time figuring out what tack she needs, etc. etc. It just *usually* takes time for everything to line up right. I see doing a 100 as a great goal but it's the getting ready that makes it worth so much. If you just grabbed a horse and managed to survive the ride it doesn't mean you've really gotten the full experience If you're an experienced 100 miler the idea might not be as farfetched...but I think most of them would take longer too.
