Re: [RC] dismount and walk or jog with horse? - rides2farAs some of you know I am new to endurance training. The hardest part for me> so far is the knee cramping. I often get off and walk or jog along with him> for a while and then mount up for more. Is this common when first starting> out? > > PattyP Walking or jogging are great to keep you loose, but if I was just starting out I'd make sure I had my stirrups at the ideal length for that horse, that speed. I'm amazed at people who use one setting on their saddle forever. I adjust my stirrups for the horse, and the ride. Slow rides I have to have them longer, fast rides (competition) will be at least an inch shorter to post at the best angles for me to relax. If you're going slow with really short stirrups you're gonna have sore knees no matter who you are or how long you've been doing this. I still have weird things happen. On slow rides I get what feels like a shin splint on the left leg. Never happens in competition, except on the Vermont 100 trail I had the worst bout of that ever. I think it was all the steep ups and downs. If I'm on a training ride I pretty much hop off any time we've got a long stretch to walk. Usually walk along tossing or kicking rocks off my trail.
