Do people actually do that? I thought there were stables nearby, and the people who ride in Central Park are on horses that live right there. I visited a friend in NYC when I was about 12 - we'd met at summer horse camp, and at Christmas vacation I visited her in the city for a few days and she visited me in the country for a few days. In the city we went to a stable near her house (by Central Park) and rode rented horses in an indoor arena. When it was her turn to visit me, we took turns riding my horse along the side of the road because there was too much snow everywhere else.
