RE: [RC] Horses & bikes on the trail... what to do??? - Lynn KinskyIf they can't miss a horse while they're zooming down the trail they're equally a menace to hikers and uphill-bound bicyclists. Exactly. And the uphill-bound cyclists (who are generally distance mountain bikers, doing 100 miles or more on a weekend) are just as critical of the young kamikazees who get a car ride to the top of the trail as the equestrians are. I worked with several of those distance riders and they were a great help in getting the mileage on the trails we used for the NATRC rides since their bikes have odometers. Meeting one of them on the trail was like meeting an equestrian or a hiker -- exchange pleasantries, advise about trail conditions, pass slowly and safely (which might involve me dismounting and turning my horse's butt into the hill on a narrow trail so no kick was possible). On the wider fire roads everyone just slows down to pass and the folks on ATVs or dirt bikes throttle back or even turn their vehicle off if the horse seems concerned --some of these folks have horses too. -- Lynn Kinsky, Santa Ynez, CA http://www.silcom.com/~lkinsky/ http://www.dslextreme.com/~napha/JoyOfRiding/ http://www.dslextreme.com/~napha/HighPoint/ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
