I completely agree with you to avoid molasses products unless you need it because the horse is not eating otherwise. Sugars are not only bad for them in the amounts supplied in grain, but they are addicting...the body adjusts and craves it...just like with us. Food that tastes REALLY good is consumed in unhealthy amounts both by horses and by ME! Did you ever notice how much you want candy and cookies after you have had some ...if you normally don't? The cravings are hard to resist. But when you don't have them much the desire for them is not as strong.
I also agree that some of our cravings are healthy...but not all. Id be careful with this approach if I were you. Trust, but verify. The horse may know what he needs and may crave it... But keep a watchful eye in case he over eats something just because it tasts good.
