[RC] EHV virus in Wellington - k s swigartJuli Bechard said: Anyway, I'm just glad my guys aren't communing with others right now. And that they are vaccinated. From: http://web.vet.cornell.edu/public/Research/zweig/osterrieder06.htm#Top "...For example, in the case of EHV-1 infection at the University riding school in Findlay, OH, more than 90% of the 138 horses became clinically sick, 35% developed neurological disease and 9% (12 horses) died or had to be euthanized. Another striking feature is that recent neurological cases of EHV-1 infection occurred despite regular vaccinations in very short intervals, indicating the possibility of the circulation of EHV-1 variants that are able to break vaccine protection. Alternatively, as suggested primarily by the outbreak at the University of Findlay, extensive use of inactivated vaccines may result in significantly increased susceptibility to the neurological form of the disease upon exposure to the agent." Not communig with others is a good way of avoiding the disease (since it is transmitted directly from horse to horse), but I don't know that I would count on having vaccinated my horse for Rhino to protect it from getting the deadly form of the disease. The jury is still out on whether it works for that at all, or if it may even make it more likely that having been regularly vaccinated your horse will get the neurological form of the disease. kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
