[RC] Eq Herpes Musings - Lynne GlazerSuspected equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) at Wellington, FL, where the English competitors winter. As a friend said, "Scary disease, in a scary location, at a scary time of the year, what with horses arriving daily from all over the world."http://www.thehorse.com/ViewArticle.aspx?ID=7558 Makes me think about how sometimes our horses have come home from rides with illness, imagine it on this scale. The Paso Fino Nationals in Georgia had a similar problem last year with illness and deaths. And I suspect they don't use communal water troughs. The latency of this is scary, since silent carrier horses can reactivate without clinical signs and spread the virus. I hope there are researchers working on this. One thing it makes me consider is getting nasal swabs done if one of my horses has the snots now to rule out EHV-1 and -4.
