Crew bags and hauling hay and water does not exist in
England. The vet checks are in camp and as for hay and water for the horse -
that's the job of the crew. They meet the rider at points along the route to
slosh down and water the horses. They can meet anywhere along the route as long
as they do not block traffic and upset people in their houses enjoying their
sunday's off. My 4wd was driven down some really narrow country roads and went
places you normally wouldn't drive just to give my horse
water.

What's your occupation?
Self-employed x 20 years, computer consulting, Mac only since
'98--but nearly full time photography now. When doing the Mac consulting spent 5
years working Mon-Thurs so I could take off for rides, decided making less money
and having more time off was desireable. Of course for the last few years it's
been 7 days a week, the starving artist role doesn't pay as well. ;-)
Being required to have a crew--anaethema here. Was that due to
circumstances, ride mgmt's inability to haul water/hay and/or crew bags to out
checks? Pre-entry, that's mostly just courtesy to the ride mgrs here until a
late fee cutoff, except for limited-entry rides.

Hi
Ridecampers
I'm curious as to
what you all do for a living that allows you to take so much time off from
work to compete.
Back in England I
was a retail manager and I had to work saturdays (no choice as it was our
busiest day) so if I was in the same position now there is now way I could go
to rides. EnduranceGB had one ride on a saturday all the rest of the ride
calendar was on sunday's so I could only go to rides that were no more than
2hrs away as we had to travel to and from the ride, do the ride and come home
the same day.
We also had to
have a crew for 40 miles and over. If you were found in breach of this you
were dq'd so it was hard finding friends willing to give up time to
crew.
I cannot wait till
spring to start competing here as it is so much more relaxed and not having to
worry whether I'll have a crew. Also we had to have our entries in 2 wks
before the ride. No turning up the day of the ride so commitment from crew was
essential.
