Re: [RC] Building Pens-?Advice on panels & soil prep? - Stacy Sadaranywhere I put gravel, I use the black fabric they now use on the roads before they lay concrete or asphalt. It really does keep the gravel from migrating and disappearing into the dirt. We did this on our 500 feet of driveway 7 years ago and the cement trucks and truss delivery trucks used the driveway and everyone else while we were building our house and barn and we havn't lost any gravel to the dirt. For my stalls, I first used the black fabric directly on the dirt and tacked it onto the walls of the stall just so I didn't have any shifting of the gravel while I did each stall. Then I used a mix of 57 stone with a crushed limestone, around here they call it a 411 mix. I watered and tamped down to get a flat smooth surface then I put mats on top. Hasn't moved a bit and the drainage is great! I also have it out the doors of the barn since it would just be mud anyway. I'm about ready
to do this minus the mats in my paddock. I can't take the mud anymore. By the way this fabric does allow water to pass just not dirt. You need to use the stuff they use for roads not the stuff for weeds. Does anyone recommend I first prepare the area underneath their pens with something to help with drainage? Someone mentioned a gravel burrito (gravel sandwiched between black underlay material used to build roads. Any other ideas?
