Great story even if apocryphal.  My tactic is "pay it forward" as a  
way to help others--when people want to "pay me back", I ask them to  
pay it forward, which hopefully has that virus effect on many instead  
of just a few.

Big city life, driving in our automobiles, etc. isolates us so, I try  
to "connect" with people where possible--checkout lines at the  
market, etc.--make eye contact, a little repartee--so easy to just  
mumble and go about one's own business.
