That is the exact thing I tried to get across in the map and compass course I taught earlier this year. It really scares me that some folk will go into the wilderness totally dependent on a GPS. I taught about backing up the GPS with a paper map, and backing up the paper map with a compass, and backing up the compass by knowing the position of the sun and stars, and backing it all up by watching where you are going. One example I used was the wreck of the Lady be Good. The inexperienced navigators, and the others they relied upon relied to much on technology and not enough on observation.
