[RC] Mule saddles and advice. - Maryanne Gabbani

I have a friend here in Egypt who has me looking for a mule for him to ride. That, in itself, is enough to cause comment here where people don't usually ride mules (Ride a mule??!! When there are literally Arabs wandering the streets??? Heavens!!) but I am thinking ahead to a saddle. Bill is a geologist for one of the petroleum companies and plans to bring a saddle back here from the US for his new darling, who has yet to be found.

What sort of saddle would you recommend, mule folk? I'm looking for a roughly 5 yr old, preferably female, molly mule for him. Hinnies are a dime a dozen in my neighbourhood but they tend to be pretty small and Bill is a good sized man, not fat but big and tall. A molly mule will still be in the 14 to 15 hh range, while a hinny is more likely to be 13 hh. He was ready to bring a saddle back on his next trip to Texas, but I suggested that it might be better to find our mule and do some measurements and digital photography first. Still, with all the saddle choices out there in the US, I'd like to point him in the right direction.

I don't board horses for people, but this project has tickled my fancy, and at the end of the day, ms. mule will end up living here when Bill and Kathleen go back to the US for good. The other good thing about this is that mules, from birth practically here, are trained to carts, first by following mom along as she works, so I'm going to have a multipurpose creature here. This would be great for Kathleen, who isn't a rider but who would definitely have a ball going for cart rides in the neighbourhood.

About fifteen years ago I bought a lovely baladi Arab mare from a friend while I was still living in Alexandria, and my first experience with babies came as Nimbus was pregnant with what proved to be a lovely molly, Koko. Koko was the fastest learner I've ever seen on four legs and later I was sorely disappointed to find that my Arab colts came nowhere near her for cooperativeness and cleverness. Unfortunately, my late husband was getting razzed bigtime by a bunch of his business buddies about her and I was keeping the girls at a sporting club in Alexandria which just really wasn't a great place for a young mule, so Koko was sold to a farmer. Now I'm getting another chance.
