Re: [RC] shortbed vs long bed - Joe LongPatty P wrote:well there is nothing to measure yet. I am looking for both trialer and truck. A nice truck is available in my price range that has a short bed. There is no ball installed. Do you know if you have some leway when installing the ball? Goosenecks have different widths, lengths, and tapers (the biggest camper trailers had no taper and little rounding of the corners and will take out the rear window of a shortbed when turning). Stability requirements dictate the placement of the hitch, be sure you have it installed by an experienced and reputable dealer. I had a prebuilt "kit" (made for my truck) installed by a trailer service center. When I bought my shortbed I had not chosen a trailer yet either, but I did enough research to know that it was not a problem for MOST horse trailers, even those with living quarters. I just made sure that when I did buy my trailer it would work with my truck. BTW, this is a controversial issue with lots of other folks who pull trailers, not just endurance riders. There are some folks who are adamant that a longbed is the only way to go, or that shortbeds are less safe. Others are just as adamant the other way. Google will take you to TONS of info. I'll only add that when I'm maneuvering in a ridecamp, or coming down a steep, twisty mountain road, I'm personally happier in a shortbed. Just look at how short some of the non-sleeper "big rig" tractors are. They look like they'd fall over on their nose if you tried to stop quick when not hauling! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
