[RC] Drinking too much water - Sheila_Larsen

My gelding suddenly started drinking lots and lots of water, 15 plus maybe
more gallons a day and was thinner than he should have been. I was on
vacation when it started so I don't know how suddenly it started (I was
gone for six weeks). However a blood test revealed that he was
hyper-thyroid, Yes I know horses are not supposed become hyper-thyroid,
but the numbers were so high that the lab ran it again to make sure. And
then we did more blood tests and the number were they same. Then we did a
thyroid test and the numbers were the same, very high. It was many years
ago so someone would have to jog my memory about thyroid numbers. For some
reason after a couple of months the numbers started to come down to normal,
we suspect a tumor perhaps pituitary. So a blood test might be in order
just to rule something like that out. The horse was fifteen or so at the
time, he is now 26 and going strong.

Good judgment comes from experience, and often experience comes from bad
judgment.
