RE: [RC] [RC] Vet Question-Biotin recommendation - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.
I haven’t seen any new data that
might contradict the earlier studies recommending 20-25 mg biotin per
dose. It might well be that more *frequent*
administration of 25 mg doses (eventually adding up to a total of 100 mg per
day) contribute to better hoof health, thus Dr. Swanstrom’s
recommendations of “100 mg per day”. Given how B vitamins are
utilized and then flushed out via the kidneys, I very much doubt that a single,
100-mg dose of biotin would benefit hoof tissue more than 25 mg or so per
dose. It’s sort of like pouring milk into an 8 ounce cup---you may
darn well want 16 ounces, but continuing to pour milk into an overflowing cup
isn’t going to change the cup’s capacity until you empty it out
again and make room for more milk.

Question-Biotin recommendation
I seem to remember Susan Garlinghouse saying that
horses will simply pee out any more than 20-25 mg of biotin per day. She
recommended Paragon Biotin Plus as having the most biotin for your buck.
That's what we use. One scoop has 50 mg, so we give 1/2 scoop per
day. It used to contain yucca, but no longer does...so no need to
discontinue it a few days before a ride.
In an article by Oscar
Swanstrom, DVM, MS (2005 Int'l Equine Vet. Hall of Fame and
Int'l Horseshoeing Hall of Fame) in Thoroughbred Times, Mar 25, 2006 he said
horses need 100mg of biotin per day plus a couple of grams of
L-methionine. It seems I remember research discussed on ridecamp (a
couple of years back) indicating that 15mg per day does the job.
Maybe the 100mg recommendation is based on newer research. Anyone
know? Kathleen
