If you're just riding to complete, and your horse is in shape, don't worry about it. I got to thinking about it, and I do this stuff whether I'm in competition or not. If my horse is hot, I sponge him to help him cool off. If he's excited, I do everything I know to do to calm him down. It might even be good for his training *not* to cool him in training but I do it anyway because I like to make him more comfortable. To me someone who doesn't do this looks lazy.
