It would not take much (if it is not already there) to cut the string and 
attach "velcro" to both ends.  Then when something grabs it, it will safely 
separate.  It will take enough force to separate the velcro that you will 
know that it has happened, so you should not accidentally loose your ditti.  
Most lanyards that are issued to hold ID badges now days have a safety 
"break" on them somewhere, just for those occasions where the odd limb jumps 
out of the cubical and grabs your ID lanyard :-)
