Re: [RC] 100 mile prospects.. - Truman PrevattYou will hear all sorts of things about conformation, easy gait, eats and drinks, etc. Those are all true. However, a horse can have the perfect conformation, eat like a pig, etc., but still not have what it takes to be a 100 mile horse. The final and maybe most important ingredient is what I call for a lack of a better term, "the eye of the tiger." They have to be bold - they will be out there for long hours some in the dark by themselves. They have to want to go on alone - because buddying up is not always possible. They have to want to get down the trail after they have been going down the trail all day long. They will have to want to go the next mile after they have gone 80 already, to go that next mile after they have gone 81 already..........They can't want to quit. I've seen many a great 50 mile horses that were built to do a 100, took care of themselves but just didn't have the boldness to make the transition. I've seen less than perfect 50 mile horses that pick up after 50 miles because they are very bold. So if I am looking for a 100 mile prospect the first place I look is in their eye. If that is good, then I check he rest. Truman -- "Life is about obstacles. Endeavors in life are not to be overlooked. Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but how we react to what happens. Not by what life brings us, but the attitude we bring to life." Wade Boggs, on his induction to the baseball hall of fame. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
