[RC] re:JD's ride - Mary HowellHere's a quick report: weather was perfect, better than any of the 5 previous years I've attended. Mid-30s at night, around 70 degrees midday and no wind - just sunshine. 21 horses started the 100 and 14 finished. Lois McAfee was first around 9:13; Jess Jarratt was 2nd and his horse looked fantastic and got a well-deserved BC. We couldn't believe the horse had even competed when we saw the horse's owner galloping him around Ridecmap Sunday am! Skip Kemmerer and Pat Oliva did a great job of sponsoring my friend Becky Supinger's daughter Jennifer in her first 100 (she was on board my reliable old Shiloh), and they all finished about 1:30 am Two of my friends were in the 50 and the deep "sugar sand" took its toll on one of them, Elyse and her mare Azza, but Jennifer Smith (steelsidedown) nailed a new shoe on her "pony" Shade while waiting in line for the vet and they were able to finish his 3rd 50 ! I was too late to see the finish of the 50 but it was a raceoff and Alison Bailey won on Mike's amazing NC horse K-Zar and got BC. You should have heard the applause when she went up to receive her awards. I had tears in my eyes I was so impressed with her courage and composure, and happy to see Mike's horse continuing a wonderful career. Head vet Otis Schmidt deserves a lot of credit - this was the third ride he'd vetted in 4 weeks and all of them had a 100 mile distance. The other vets, some of whom were new to this ride, helped out a lot with the workload. JD and crew did a great job and continue to give me something to look forward to every year!!!!
