I had tried a light fleece cooler first with the
same results as a light blanket, hot & wetter when we get home. I thought
the fleece was too warm so tried the lighter blanket. Still hot & sweaty
except on uncovered parts, head & neck. I’m going to try uncovered
next time, and just stop & check him on the way home to see if he’s
shivering at all, and if he is I’ll cover him
up.

And for the original poster who asked about
transporting a sweat dampened horse in an open (stock) trailer, in the cold,
for 30 minutes -- if it was my horse, I would put a
lightweight wool cooler on for the trailer ride home. The horse will stay warm and comfortable
under a cooler, and you won't have to worry about the possibility of it getting
chilled.
