Re: [RC] to blanket or not - Sisu West Ranch"...caribou or elk in a "blanket"? They survive quite well at temps into single digits F..." Try -40 F. Seriously, the temperature at which many horse owners feel the need to "protect" their horse by blankets, or stableing is more determined by the owner than any needs of the equine. We have had horses for 30+ years. Most of that time was in WI, before we moved here where it is much warmer. During that time, the only winter shelter the horses have had is a wind break. No blankets etc. We routinely ride in the cold and trailer without blankets. One Feb. we went to Nebraska to get a weanling from the breeder. There was a discussion that perhaps, since we had an open stock trailer, and the ride was 800 miles she should be blanketed. Since the filly had been born on the Nebraska prairie and never had a blanket on, I insisted that we not compound the possibility of a wreck by doing blanket training the same time as loading and trailer training. She arrived in WI just fine. My bottom line: Horses are much more suited than people to live in cold climates.
