RE: [RC] Question about Truck Tires - David LeBlancIt's certainly best for the shop's profits if you replace
all the tires, so yeah, it's best, depending on how you figure best. What you
want to think about is whether the other tires are worn, too - maybe they're
giving you good advice and looking out for your safety. Ask them why they want
to replace the others, maybe get someone else to look at them and see what they
say. An easy test is to put a penny into the middle groove, see how much tread
is left. You can use your 'new' spare as a reference.
How new your spare really is depends on how old it is. If
it's 4-5 years old, I'm not sure I'd trust it, even if it's never hit the road,
and it also depends on hot it is where you live. It will live longer in cooler
climates. If it's not very old, go ahead and use it.
You can get problems where the vehicle pulls on one side or
the other if the tires aren't matched. This is almost guaranteed if they aren't
matched side to side, but it is much less likely to happen if they aren't
matched front to back. Not being matched can also happen when they're the same
brand and model of tire, but have a lot more wear on one side than the
other.
If you buy only 2 new tires, always put them on the
front.
