You issue each competitor a GPS which reports the exact position at the 24 hours. Since the event organizers know the trails, position exactly determines the miles traveled. First, for this new event I suggest it be a max of 12 hrs...since a quick endurance horse will finish 100 miles in 12 hrs. so 24 could go way overboard. Then...in a wonderful celebration of GPS technology, I suggest you put them all in one place, shoot off a gun, and have them scatter llike quail heading off in every direction. No need to even teach the horse to steer. Just run for 12 hrs. and check the GPS to see who is the winner!
