Re: [RC] weed free - Truman PrevattThere was research out of UC Davis on this issue. There is ongoing research funded by the AERC at Wisconsin I believe. It's being done. An interesting note - we work closely with our nearby state forest. We are in the process of opening more miles of horse trails. The environmentalist are not real happy and they played the "weed card." They were told point blank by the head range that the ranger's vehicles and the boots of the hunters and hikers bring in more weed seeds than horses do. They were told by the state biologist that the biggest contributor to weeds in the forest were the deer that ate on the nearby farm land. The environmentalist were saying the forest should "make the farmers" remove the weeds. To which the head ranger told them when they come back with the 100's of millions of dollars necessary to buy the land - he'll talk to him. He went on to tell them even if you bought the land and the boundary where the deer freely roam would expand there was no guarantee they would not still go onto private land to graze. Sometimes it just takes a good ranger that has done his homework and understands the problem. Truman Bonnie Peralez wrote: "So we need to understand what the impacts are of horses. We need to know these as facts backed by real research." -- “Ethical axioms are found and tested not very differently from the axioms of science.
