RE: [RC] Daily dewormer and diatomaceous earth - heidiI'd agree that the success is not due to the DE. In my
experience, DE has some impact on fly larvae in the manure, but
not much on internal parasites.
With regard to Strongid C, it has a place in the war against worms,
and that place is in young horses in close confinement. That's
the ONLY place where I would suggest its use.
Lynne and others are right that there is at least an anecdotal
connection between Strongid C in endurance horses and an increase in
incidence of anterior enteritis--not entirely sure why, but have seen
enough cases to be concerned about it.
Patty and others are right that long-term use can lead to resistant
worms.
I know that Fort Dodge will pay for colic surgeries (doesn't mean
that you won't have bills for non-surgical colics still--and no, it
doesn't prevent all of them, not by a long shot)--but with the ton of
money that they make on Strongid C, they can darn well afford to.
For them, it's kind of like selling lottery tickets--sure, they have to
pay out sometimes, but believe me, the "bank" is always the winner!
Best bet is understanding the life cycles of worms in your locale and
putting together a management program that includes appropriate
dewormers at appropriate times of year, coupled with good pasture
management and good horse husbandry.
