RE: [RC] Daily Care Costs - David LeBlanc

Title: RE: [RC] Daily Care Costs
Exactly. I figure ongoing costs of $100/horse per month, assuming that they're boarded at home. If hay keeps going up, maybe I need to bump that up.However, spending on the vet ranges from very little (< $100) up to around $2000/month. Those are bad months, and that's with currently 9(was 10 until about 3 months ago) horses. The really expensive month is when the equine dentist shows up, and they get all their shots, and coggins, etc. This also includes dogs and cats - they all go to the same clinic (different vets), so that's a high estimate because there's 6 cats and 4 dogs. All of this can really foul up the budget, since there's no knowing whether your vet expenses are going to be nothing, or $1000.

There's also a strong incentive to ride sanely over rocks, since showing up at the vet and doing a thorough job of finding out just why the horse is lame can easily cost $600.

It's also a good idea to put a little away every month for huge emergency vet bills.  There's no such thing as colic prevention medicine, else equine vets would just about go out of business.
