RE: [RC] [RC] what do I think when coming off? - Elizabeth ChaseI had a similar experience when riding with a (now former) acquaintance who deliberately spooked a young buck in our direction. Delphi seemed to leap sideways, and I remember seeing my butt in the saddle, but feeling like my head and shoulders were still at the original site. Didn't come off, though. At about the same moment we were in the same airspace again, a**h**e had found another group of deer and was playing roundup with them, charging them in our direction. This time she bolted straight forward and I just hunkered down for the flight until she started slowing down, then did the one-rein stop. Didn't come off that time, either. Idiot claimed he wanted to see how my horse reacted to the deer. Last time we ever rode and I moved to a new barn w/in two weeks. The time I did come off her was, during a solo outing --- same barn as above--- when we were walking along a trail which was adjacent to a railroad right of way. The regular train schedule is general known, but along came an unexpected 'maintenance' train. I had her in a one-rein stop, got my feet out of the stirrups and was mid-air when the rein broke. I remember thinking back to old judo and parachute landing fall training.... relax, drop, and roll........ spread the impact over as much body surface as as possible to minimize major trauma. Delphi bolted for home and I got to skid along my back, shoulders, and back of my head, which hit last, according to the train guy. Lost conciousness for about 10 minutes from what I'm told, and came to with the EMS crew securing me to neck and back boards. EMS team agreed with the TD about my landing, based on my skid pattern. Train driver had called 911 when he saw the rein break and stayed with me until the ambulance left. Had a great visit in the ER stab room, a bit of a reunion with a bunch of residents now trauma team docs who had trained where I work. I was so glad to see people I knew and had confidence in. Negative CT for fractures or bleeds, and they located some documentable residual brain tissue remaining despite my army training and being a parent. Liz -- guess that military training was good for something after all Delphi -- deer are fine, just not when they pop up under my chin Caleb -- you'll need a parachute if you come off me Minnesota --- holding it's breath before the first snow.... --- RHONDA LEVINSON <rhndlev@xxxxxxx> wrote: I swear I have a horse that moves so fast, he has disappeared out from under me and reappeared 15 feet off to the side while I was still hanging in mid-air. I felt like Wiley Coyote! I actually had time to look over at him way off to the side of the trail and think, "Oh. That can't be good."
