Re: [RC] What do you think when you are coming off? - Karen Sullivan----- Original Message ----- From: "Maryanne Gabbani" <msgabbani@xxxxxxx> Gee, I don't usually get a thought together until I'm already on the ground. Then it's usually a survey of moving body parts. Maryanne Giza I have been dumped twice off my big mustang, Coyote. Last spring I was riding with some gals back to the trailers on a very hard dirt/rock road. I left them to trot ahead and give a message to another friend, then turned around to trot back to my friends. We trotted about a half mile without finding them;hm....then approached a blind curve. Just as I was thinking to slow down as they might be coming; they popped around the corner (walking). But my mare did a 360 and I started to slooowwwwllllllly come off as she made the turn, thinking, "dammit, this is going to hurt, I just HATE falling on this road." My guardian angel must have been listening, as I missed the road and went over the edge. My luck was holding as there was no rocks or poison oak in this section just wonderful, soft and cushioning bushes. I lay there for a minute thinking, "hey, this is so comfortable I may just take a nap here; forget this riding crap!". Meanwhile, from a distance, my friends had seen me come off and totally disappear over the side!!! Fearing the worst, they hurried up, to find me lying on my back, laughing. Last summer I was riding on the beach in Humboldt county, the best beach in the world, totally flat and hard when the tide is out, no waves or cliffs, no lumps of seaweed, etc. Last year I had fallen when a horse shied at the tiny waves, and the wet sand was as hard as pavement....I was pissed. This year we hit perfect late afternoon calm, no wind, tide out, gorgeous. Walking along with friends, about done warmup...watching a jogger approach (watched him come for about 10minutes)...he passed us; not even near the horses...then WHAM; my mare bogs her head, catapults me way up in the air; I did some convoluted movement to prevent me from hitting my head (had a helmet)....and was thinking, "damn, it's going to hurt, this sand is HARD. Hit the ground and lay on my hip, wondering if it was broken..watching my mare buck and buck about a 1/4 mile towards the highway....also thinking I hoped a logging truck ran her over! My friends asked if I was okay, I said, not sure. a friend caught the mare, I dusted myself off and climbed back on; made her trot rest of ride in soft sand until she was huffing. This recent thread on bucking has been very informative, believe me, as i have ruled out teeth, back, tack, etc. Seems to be alpha mare attitude.
